A COMBINATION OF DISCRETE EVENT SIMULATION AND MULTI-CRITERIA ANALYSIS TO CONFIGURE SUGARCANE DROP AND HOOK DELIVERY SYSTEMS REA
Faria,Danilo A. F. de; Frazão,Márcia L. da S.; Vieira,José G. V.; Silva,João E. A. R. da; Lemos,Paula H..
ABSTRACT This article explores decision analysis regarding Drop and Hook (D&H) transportation operations at sugarcane mills. By means of a case study, a combination of a discrete event simulation model and multi-attribute utility theory was used to evaluate different configurations for sugarcane delivery systems using internal, external, or no D&H systems. A D&H strategy maximises truck utilisation, as semi-trailers can be handled independently of the traction unit of the trucks, which makes the transport system more agile. For internal D&H systems the semi-trailer detaching/attaching point is located inside the mill site while for external D&H systems it is located outside, before the trucks’ weighbridge. Each configuration requires...

Building consolidated performance indicators for an agribusiness company: a case study R. Bras. Zootec.
Rosado Júnior,Adriano Garcia; Lobato,José Fernando Piva; Müller,Claúdio.
The objective of this study was to implement an indicator system that allows an overview of the performance at all levels of the company and to evaluate its overall performance using a consolidate general indicator. In the company studied, three business sectors were identified (crops, beef cattle production and viticulture) in addition to management sector, to which strategic objectives were determined. After that, it was mapped the macroprocesses that compose each business activity, a total of 14, and the critical indicators of performance to achieve the objectives, making up 50 indicators whose objectives were definied by the management team. It is possible to build consolidated indicators using the Analytic Hierarchy Process method, which allows...

Classification of rural areas in Europe using social sustainability indicators AgEcon
Chatzinikolaou, Parthena; Manos, Basil D.; Bournaris, Thomas.
Social sustainability is “one of the three legs of the sustainability stool” (the other two are environmental and economic. There is limited literature that focuses on social sustainability to the extent that a comprehensive study of this concept is still missing. As a result, there have been very few attempts to define social sustainability as an independent dimension of sustainable development. Social sustainability is related to social capital, social inclusion, social exclusion and social cohesion in rural economies, terms that are measured by relevant social sustainability indicators. This paper aims to measure these indicators and to compare them. In order to measure these indicators, a household survey carried out in the context of the research...

Environmental fragility and vegetation cover dynamics in the Lapa Grande State Park, MG, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAMPOS,JASMINE A.; AIRES,UILSON R.V.; SILVA,DEMETRIUS D. DA; CALIJURI,MARIA LÚCIA.
Abstract: The environmental fragility analysis evaluates the susceptibility of an environment to degradation. Thus, the goals of this work are to analyze and map the environmental fragility of the Lapa Grande State Park (PELG), Brazil, and its buffer zone (ZA) and also quantify the changes in the vegetation cover before and after the implementation of the PELG. The environmental fragility was evaluated through multicriteria analysis using the factors: slope, geology, pedology and land use and land cover. The changes in the high vigor vegetation cover were determined from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for 1996, 2006 and 2016. It was verified that the central-east and northeast regions of the PELG presented the greatest environmental...

Managing nitrate pollution in a Tunisian irrigated area: A multi-criteria analysis approach AgEcon
Laajimi, Abderraouf; Ben Nasr, J.; Ferchichi, M..
In Tunisia, the extension of irrigated area is justified by its important role in the development and diversification of agricultural production. Nevertheless, the strong intensification of the agricultural activities may lead to the pollution of underground water resources due to an excess use of fertilisers and other chemical products. In fact, the high nitrate concentrations observed in some Tunisian irrigated areas, are related to the excessive use of nitrate fertilizers in intensive agriculture. The objective of the present study is to implement decision-making methods allowing a better combination of factors production by optimization of an economic objective and an environmental objective. This research is based on multi-criteria modelling through...

Mapping the likelihood of foot-and-mouth disease introduction along the border between Brazil and Paraguay PAB
Amaral,Thaís Basso; Gond,Valery; Tran,Annelise.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to apply fuzzy majority multicriteria group decision-making to determine risk areas for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) introduction along the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The study was conducted in three municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, located along the border with Paraguay. Four scenarios were built, applying the following linguistic quantifiers to describe risk factors: few, half, many, and most. The three criteria considered to be most likely to affect the vulnerability to introduction of FMD, according to experts' opinions, were: the introduction of animals in the farm, the distance from the border, and the type of property settlements. The resulting maps show a strong spatial...

Selecting appropriate bedding to reduce locomotion problems in broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Almeida Paz,ICL; Garcia,RG; Bernardi,R; Nääs,IA; Caldara,FR; Freitas,LW; Seno,LO; Ferreira,VMOS; Pereira,DF; Cavichiolo,F.
Two experiments were carried out at the Poultry Sector of the School of Agrarian Sciences of the Federal University of Grande Dourados to evaluate the incidence of leg problems in broilers reared on two distinct types of bedding material: rice husks or wood shavings, both new and reused. In both trials, a randomized experimental design was applied in factorial arrangement (2 x 2 x 2) using two genetic strains (Cobb® or Ross®); two sexes (male or female), and two litter materials (rice husks or wood shavings). In each trial 1080 one day pullets were reared equally divided in the treatments. The birds were placed in 4.5 m² boxes at a density of 10 birds m-2. All birds were fed diets with equal nutritional density, and water was offered ad libitum. Feeds were...

Soil maps, field knowledge, forest inventory and Ecological-Economic Zoning as a basis for agricultural suitability of lands in Minas Gerais elaborated in GIS Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Vladimir Antonio; Curi,Nilton; Marques,João José Granate; Carvalho,Luis Marcelo Tavares de; Santos,Walbert Júnior Reis dos.
Lands (broader concept than soils, including all elements of the environment: soils, geology, topography, climate, water resources, flora and fauna, and the effects of anthropogenic activities) of the state of Minas Gerais are in different soil, climate and socio-economics conditions and suitability for the production of agricultural goods is therefore distinct and mapping of agricultural suitability of the state lands is crucial for planning guided sustainability. Geoprocessing uses geographic information treatment techniques and GIS allows to evaluate geographic phenomena and their interrelationships using digital maps. To evaluate the agricultural suitability of state lands, we used soil maps, field knowledge, forest inventories and databases related to...

Sustainable Decision-making: The State of the Art from an Economics Perspective AgEcon
Toman, Michael.
Government, corporate and other decision makers are more and more often being urged to 'act sustainably' and to pursue policy paths toward 'sustainable development.' However, application of these concepts is hampered by serious interdisciplinary disagreements about the interactions of humans with their environment. Moreover, reducing disagreements about sustainability cannot be achieved solely through an improvement in scientific knowledge. These observations lead me to express skepticism about the capacity of any more or less mechanistic rule, economic, scientific or otherwise, to provide definitive and reliable answers about sustainable policies or conduct. However, there are processes and procedures that can help guide decision-making. I underscore the...

Using Information from Mid Term Evaluations of RDP for the Multicriteria Analysis of Agri-environmental Schemes AgEcon
Bartolini, Fabio; Finn, J.; Kurz, Isabelle; Samoggia, Antonella; Viaggi, Davide.
This paper discusses how environmental indicators and multicriteria methodologies can support the ex post evaluation of Agri-Environmental Schemes. The paper is based on information from the Mid term evaluation of the Rural Development Programmes and develops around an example that compares Ireland and Emilia-Romagna. The results show that the application of Agri-Environmental Schemes only partially achieves to local objectives, and the way in which the Agri-Environmental Schemes are implemented can be reasonably improved. However, the tentative analysis emphasizes the scarcity of quantitative data that can be related to effectiveness, the lack of predetermined quantitatively defined target levels of objectives and the difficulty to assess the relative...
